In 2015, IPS was established to promote the contribution that psychological research, knowledge and practice can play in preventing terrorism and other forms of ideological and group-based violence.

Ideological violence refers to violence committed because of ideologies that encourage, incite, or oblige its use; it is associated with terrorism, hate crime, honour-based crime, organised and gang-related crime.

Since that time, IPS has provided consultancy, technical assistance and psychological services nationally and internationally, primarily in the criminal justice and security sectors e.g. prisons, probation, parole, police.

IPS aims to:

  • Prevent and protect individuals and groups from harming others, communities and their own lives and futures

  • Provide high quality evidence-based or evidence-informed services and products

  • Provide services and products primarily, but not exclusively, informed by theory, research and practice in the behavioural sciences, notably psychology and criminology

  • Collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organisations who share our vision

  • Deliver services in a safe, ethical and secure manner with due consideration for the importance of public protection, human rights and working responsibly alongside statutory agencies
